Merle W. "Snipe" Houk, Jr. of 429 Hilltop Lane, Portersville passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 in the emergency room of Butler Memorial Hospital. Born on May 27, 1960 in New Castle, Merle was the son of the late Merle W. and Billiejeanne Boyd Houk. He married the former LuAnn Piper on June 19, 2004. Mr. Houk was a Veteran of the Persian Gulf War where he served in the US Navy. He was a member of Living Manna Foursquare Church in Ellwood City. He was also a member of the Disabled Veterans of America, ROTC and the New Castle Eagles Club. In addition to his wife, Merle is survived by his children, Sarah Kay Houk-Morris and her husband, James Morris of New Castle, Jennifer Rose Houk of Beaver Falls, Michael Anthony and Dani Jo Hogue of Ellwood City, Russel James Hogue of Portersville and Alan Joseph Hogue of Monaca, 10 grandchildren and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Shirley Houk and Terry and Valerie Houk, all of New Castle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Maryann Houk. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 29th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Joseph A. Tomon, Jr. Funeral Home and Crematory, 97 Grim Avenue, Ellport. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, July 30th at 11:00 AM with Pastor Sam Fidell of Living Manna Foursquare Church. Interment will take place in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Contributions can be made in Mr. Houk's name to the Disabled Veterans of America, www.dav.org

I Worked with Merle in the late '70s in the enginnering spaces on the USS Blakely.

Please except my deepest sympathy for the passing of Merle. I only knew him for a few moments at the VA and he impressed me as a very nice person.
