Maria San Pedro Rice, of 216 Martin Avenue, Ellport passed away peacefully in her residence on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 11:35 PM, surrounded by her loving family. Maria was born in the Philippines, a daughter of the late Benigno and Ignacia Salazar San Pedro. She attended Far Eastern University and graduated with a B.S. degree in Home Economics. She came to the United States in 1954 with her husband, Coulson J. Rice, whom she married March 31, 1946, and two children. Maria was hired by Penn State University, giving lectures and teaching classes on nutrition and sewing. Later she was hired as a caseworker and eventually became a supervisor for the Lawrence County Public Assistance Office. She also taught adult evening classes in Ellwood City and Riverside Schools. Maria contributed to the community by serving as a Girl Scout leader and a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of Calvin United Presbyterian Church. Maria was a gifted artist in water and oil painting as well as a gifted pianist. Her other interests included ballroom dancing, gardening, crafts, needlepoint and traveling with her husband. Maria's greatest joy was being with her family. She showed her children the meaning of unconditional love. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, as well as her children, Oscar T. Rice and his wife, Deborah of Greensburg, PA, Coulson John Rice and his wife, Roberta of Sharpsville, PA, Mary Elaine Scrima of Ellport, and Robert G. Rice of Coroapolis, PA. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren: Nichole Maria Rice Smith and her husband, Nicholas, Sarah Marie Scrima Kelosky and her husband, Joseph, Victoria J. Rice, Hanna M. Scrima, Tanner H. and Taylor M. Rice, her great-grandchildren: Lilliana Scrima, Camden Pisani and Alexander and Dominic Smith, and a sister, Ligaya Granflor of Baldwin Park, CA. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews in California, Nevada and the Philippines. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers: Chitong, Amando and Benigno San Pedro and her sister, Naomi Del Rosario. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 16th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Joseph A. Tomon, Jr. Funeral Home and Crematory, 97 Grim Avenue, Ellport. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 17th at 11:00 AM with Rev. James Latta of Calvin United Presbyterian Church, celebrant. Memorial contributions can be made in Mrs. Rice's name to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 810 River Ave., Suite 100, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.

Mr. Rice, Oscar, John, Elaine, Bobby and families. It is said that life is an accumualation of memories that we make. Your wife and mother, as well as all of you, are among my fondest life's memories. Please accept my sympathies. I can only imagine the hurt and emptiness you all must feel. I'll place Mrs. Rice's name on my next prayer donation to be placed at the alter at St. Jude in Chicago. I adopted him as my patron Saint many years ago.
